The sources for this research are the History manuals written by Brother Damascene (BD) and the archiepiscopal guidelines published in the Ecclesiastical Bulletin of the Archdiocese of Montevideo (in Spanish). The article seeks to reconstruct the meanings of a Catholic nation and a tutelary State from the conditioning that the secularization process caused in the Church. The proposal aims at an inter-discursive study that allows a comparative reading of the themes and approaches recovered by the authors in order to achieve recognition of the ecclesiastical institution in the face of the new legal reality that emerged in 1919. |

Con este fin, se abordan los discursos eclesiásticos en torno a los orígenes de la nación y la organización estatal a la luz de las tensiones particulares que la Iglesia y el Estado uruguayo atravesaron a principios de siglo. Las fuentes para esta investigación son los manuales de Historia escritos por el Hermano Damasceno (HD) y las pautas arzobispales publicadas en el Boletín Eclesiástico de la Arquidiócesis de Montevideo. Se busca reconstruir los significados de los conceptos de nación católica y Estado tutelar a partir de los condicionamientos que el proceso de secularización provocó en la Iglesia. La propuesta apunta a un estudio interdiscursivo que permita una lectura comparada de temas y enfoques recuperados por los autores con el fin de lograr el reconocimiento de la institución eclesiástica ante la nueva realidad jurídica surgida en 1919.Este artigo analisa as concepções de nação e de Estado sustentadas pela Igreja Católica entre 1900 e 1930. Para tanto, abordam-se os discursos eclesiásticos sobre as origens da nação e da organização do Estado à luz das tensões particulares que a Igreja e pelo Estado uruguaio no início do século. As fontes para esta pesquisa são os manuais de História escritos pelo Irmão Damasceno (HD) e as orientações arquiepiscopais publicadas no Boletim Eclesiástico da Arquidiocese de Montevidéu. Busca reconstruir os sentidos dos conceitos de nação católica e Estado tutelar a partir do condicionamento que o processo de secularização provocou na Igreja.
