Shrnutí:This article attempts to adjust the definition of performance in order to examine certain aspects of media and artistic practices developed in recent decades. Evoking his itinerary from the 1970s to the present, we wish to detect and analyze its most recent characteristics. With the intensification of some aspects of “the society of the spectacle” at the beginning of the 21st century, reinforced by the growing influence of audiovisual and interactive media, as well as by the market intrusion in areas which previously were closed to it, significant changes are affecting subjectivity and sociability. These new lifestyles stimulate the construction of oneself under the gaze of others, promoting a generalization of performative gestures in an attempt to “make yourself visible” in order to “be somebody”. It should be inquired, therefore, the specificity and the value of these practices in artistic terms, as well as its legitimacy or political validity.
